Tips on How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter
Winter is on its way.
And while we may not get much in the way of harsh winters here in Texas, it’s still important to properly prepare your roof for the changing seasons.
So, with that being said, here are our top tips for preparing your roof for winter.
Stay warm out there!
Clean the Gutters
With fall just about behind us, leaves have been slowly falling from the trees around your house for the past couple months. And while the falling leaves are certainly beautiful, they can do a lot of damage to your roof if you forget to clean them out of the gutters. Clogged gutters cause water to build up and overflow onto your roof, which in turn can cause costly water damage to your roof. So be sure to clean the gutters!
Locate Any Leaks
While you’re checking out the gutters and other parts of your roof, pay attention also to any potential water leaks. It’s always a good idea to stay on the lookout for leaks, as they are much easier – and less expensive – to fix if you can catch them early on, but this is especially important during the changing seasons. Be sure to keep an eye out for pesky leaks and get them taken care of before they become a bigger issue.
Clear Away Debris
When you are inspecting, and cleaning out your gutters, take a few minutes to survey the rest of your roof. If you notice any debris – like leaves and tree branches, for example – be sure to clean that off your roof. The more you allow debris to build up over time, the more damage it will end up causing in the long run. This is especially true if you have somewhat of a flat roof, so make a point to clear away the debris.
Check the Insulation
Is the insulation in your attic sufficient to block out the cooling temperatures and keep the heat inside your home? If you’re not sure, now is a great time to take a look and address any insulation issues you might find. Not only will this help to preserve your roof, but it will also help to cut down on energy usage and heating costs all throughout the cold winter months. It’ll only take a minute and could end up saving you money in the long run.
Be Aware of Ice and Snow
We may not get a lot of ice or snow in Texas, but it’s still important to stay aware of this as the days begin to turn colder. When ice and snow are allowed to build up on a roof over time, both can cause significant – and costly – damage to the roof and more. So, if we do happen to experience a rare Texas ice or snow storm, don’t forget to check the roof once it’s finished and clear away anything that has piled up.
Cut Back the Trees
The changing seasons is a great reminder to pay attention to the trees surrounding your house and trim back any that might be growing a bit too close. Heavy winds, rains, and storms in the winter can cause trees near your home to fall, which in turn could cause a lot of costly damage to both your roof and your house in general. While you’re out checking for debris, be sure to check out the trees and plan to cut them back as soon as possible.
